Precision Real-World Measurement on Any Screen

Instant Ruler was created to solve a universal physical problem: you need to measure an object right now, but your tape measure is nowhere to be found. We bridge the gap between digital displays and real-world physical dimensions.

🎯

1:1 Actual Scale

Every millimeter and inch rendered on screen matches real-world physical dimensions within sub-millimeter tolerances after calibration.

🔒

100% Client-Side Privacy

Zero telemetry. Measurements, camera photos, and calibration data never leave your browser. All computations execute locally on your device.

The Science Behind On-Screen Calibration

When a web browser renders elements on your screen, it operates in CSS pixels rather than physical units. By W3C specification, CSS defines 1 inch = 96 CSS pixels. However, modern displays do not physically have 96 pixels per inch:

Display TypePhysical PPIDPR (Device Pixel Ratio)Default Error Without Calibration
Standard Desktop (24" 1080p)91.8 PPI1.0×~4.5% error
MacBook Pro 16" Liquid Retina254.0 PPI2.0×~24.5% error
27" 4K UHD Desktop Monitor163.2 PPI1.5× / 2.0×~15–40% error
Modern Smartphone (OLED)320–460 PPI3.0×Up to 60% error

Because web browsers cannot query your physical monitor's diagonal size via standard web APIs due to privacy fingerprinting protections, an uncalibrated web ruler is only an approximation.

Instant Ruler solves this by employing physical reference metrology. By placing an object of known physical dimensions against your display—such as an ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 standard bank card or standard government coinage—our calibration engine calculates the exact ratio of CSS pixels to physical millimeters.

Metrological Reference Standards

ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 Standard

Defines the physical dimensions of financial transaction cards, debit cards, driver's licenses, and health insurance cards as exactly 85.60 mm × 53.98 mm (3.370 in × 2.125 in) with a 3.18 mm corner radius.

NIST & Metric Definition

In accordance with international metrology agreements, 1 inch is defined as exactly 25.4 millimeters. Our unit conversion tables follow NIST Special Publication 811 standards.

Accuracy & Usage Notice

Instant Ruler is engineered for design, educational, architectural drafting, DIY crafting, and household measuring applications. When calibrated with a physical card or coin, measurements achieve typical accuracy within ±0.2 mm. For certified legal metrology, aerospace engineering, or medical diagnosis, calibrated steel calipers and laboratory-grade instruments must be used.
